Can I tow it?

Enter your vehicle's limits and your trailer's loaded weight. The calculator checks the trailer, hitch, payload and combined weight together, because passing one limit does not mean you pass the others.

How the check works

Tongue weight = trailer × tongue %
Trailer ≤ maximum trailer weight
Tongue weight ≤ hitch tongue limit
People + cargo + tongue weight ≤ payload
Curb + people + cargo + trailer ≤ GCWR

A conventional trailer should put about 10–15% of its weight on the hitch; a fifth wheel or gooseneck about 15–25%. Too little tongue weight makes a trailer sway. If you are close to any limit, weigh the loaded rig at a truck scale before a long trip. Not sure what to enter under people + cargo? The payload calculator adds it up from your placard. Not sure what to enter for curb weight? See curb weight explained. Don't know your exact model? Decode your VIN to find its towing chart.

Your vehicle's own labels and owner's manual are the final word. Ratings change with engine, axle ratio, cab, drive and tow package, so use the figures for your exact vehicle. Read the guide to the five weight ratings if any of these terms are new.
